CLIFTON – Some are saying New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress was justified in carrying a gun into a Manhattan night club just days after his fellow Giants wide receiver Steve Smith, 23, was robbed at gunpoint feet from his Cambridge Crossings condo in Clifton.
After getting out of his car at about 4 a.m. on Nov. 25, Smith told Clifton police he was approached from behind by a man who pointed a black revolver at his head and said: "give me everything you got," said detective Capt. Robert Rowan.
After Smith handed over several thousand dollars in jewelry and cash along with his wallet, Rowan said the suspect ran off. Clifton police officers arrived on the scene and searched the gated community complex but did not find the suspect described by Smith as a black man, 5 feet 10 inches tall and about 180 pounds with no facial hair and wearing a gray jacket.
A silver two-door Mercedes was seen in the area before the robbery, Rowan said, adding he's not sure if the car was connected to the robbery or whether or not the suspect was working alone.
Rowan said Smith arrived home alone.

Some have used this robbery to justify Burress' possession of a gun in a nightclub. Burress was arraigned on Monday for possession of a loaded weapon, after accidentally shooting himself in the leg in a Manhattan nightclub.
But Rowan said he doesn't think owning a gun necessarily helps.
"If someone has a drop on you how are you going to get your gun out," Rowan said.
